I love SPAM!

Just a short note here to give some props to Brandon over at devNulled for his awesome CFAkismet CFC. I've always known about Akismet which is a great spam comment tool / web service developed for WordPress but never got around to implementing it. Well this weekend i sat down to work on a personal project which needed Akismet functionality. So i did a search to see if anyone else in the CF world had already built this as a tag or CFC and sure enough there was Brandon's CFC.

So we've got the Akismet stuff locked and loaded. I've already taken a smattering of old spam and thrown it at the blog and I'm happy to report it was all caught by Akismet and our code didn't have to even fall back to our backup checks.

So if you've got a blog or need to check comments etc i encourage you to deploy Akismet and if you're a CF developer get Brandon's code and implement it today!

Generation Flex

We are imminently approaching the launch of our first RIA E-Commerce application utilizing the power of Flex 2. We’ve built a dynamic front end product browser and shopping cart that is managed by a complete set of store administration tools integrated into i3SiteTools, DP’s site management system. I’d like to take the time to relate a few of the finer points and pitfalls we’ve encountered during our setup and development process.

Cause for Celebration

Today marks my year anniversary at Digital Positions. How I survived David, Beth, and Ben’s ‘yellow1 approach, not to mention Eric’s phone voice, I’ll never know. But here I am, still going strong.

Has it really been a year? It feels as if I just walked through the door yesterday. But looking back I can’t believe how much has happened in the past year and how much I have grown as a developer. I have gone from being a strictly ColdFusion programmer to a much more well-rounded developer. Of course ColdFusion is still a huge part of my skill set and I have ramped up my knowledge by delving deep into i3SiteTools, DP’s own site management system, utilizing the power of CFCs, and getting my ColdFusion MX 7 Developer certification.

However, at Digital Positions I have had the chance to get involved in much more than the ColdFusion world alone. I have had the opportunity to be a part of the RIA movement by helping develop an AJAX based online application and assisting in developing a soon to launch Flex shopping cart application. I have also had the delight of becoming the lead here for all things CSS. Prior to my time here at DP, my experience with CSS was simply stylizing font and now I am creating cross-browser compliant table-less layouts left and right, and loving it.

Looking back, the past year has been a good one. And looking forward I am excited about things to come. In addition to more RIA apps coming our way, we are busy preparing for i3SiteTools going open source. There is a lot going on here at DP and I am grateful to be a part of it. Yes, it’s even worth putting up with Eric’s phone voice.

1. All DP employees have their own Herrmann Brain Dominance profile. Being a detail oriented ‘green’ planner, I’m not always on the same wavelength as those ‘yellow’ holistic conceptualizers.

Internet Explorer 7 Official

Microsoft launched Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) last night without much fan fair. There where a few blog posts on the official IE7 blog and of course the IE7 homepage was updated but nothing else came up on my radar. I found it because of a post on the Washington Post  RSS feed and a few other sites made mention of it as well. My guess is that a news moratorium expired on the 18th which allowed everyone to "break" the news .

If you are running Windows XP, or Windows 2003 you'll be able to download this newer version but those of you on Windows 2000 or older are out of luck. IE7 takes advantage of stuff (really technical term there) in Windows XP and Windows Vista to improve security and other features.

In our internal testing with the Release Candidates the browser has worked satisfactorily and hasn't caused any major headaches with our clients web sites. The new interface will take some time getting used to so be prepared to curse at it for a bit.

Let us know what you think about IE7!

Flex Your Layout Muscles

Left to my own devices I will try to make a toaster using Flex --- it's just that cool.  Here's my most recent idea for how to use Flex for short-cutting the painful process of HTML prototyping.

Comments Now Work

So our comments have been broken on our blog for sometime now but we didn't know about it until our last post. Thanks to Sam from our local ACFUG for pointing it out. If you tried to post a comment in the past and couldn't please retry and let us know if it breaks again!

CSS for Print

Print stylesheets can be an important tool to modify the existing layout for print without having to create an entirely new template.  I recently utilized the power of print stylesheets to solve an Internet Explorer print rendering issue for one of our clients.
