Ok, first off, let me say that Digital Positions isn’t spying on you. However, we are monitoring your activity when you visit a site we’ve built. Now before you fire up your favorite email client and prepare to alert the masses about our big-brother activities, let me explain. You see, we’ve built into i3SiteTools (our site management system) the ability to alert our developers to any errors which might occur while browsing our client sites.
I’d like to proclaim our code as being bullet proof and never fails but we’re realists here and we know that even with all our extensive testing and debugging things slip through the cracks. We also know that when a user finds one of these bugs, their first thought isn’t “Oh, cool! I found a bug, let me drop a friendly well thought-out email to the webmaster so they ca fix it.” No typically the user reaction is either “It broke! I’m outta here!” or “Oh cool! A bug. Let me see if I can exploit this site using the error data provided...”
So what exactly are we doing? It’s actually really simple, on most of our sites (like 95% of them) if an error is encountered, the error is logged, and an email is dispatched to our trouble ticket system so a developer can investigate it and fix it. The site visitor will only see a nice friendly error message that lets them know there was an error and that we’ve been notified. We also provide some hints or advice for the visitor to try and remedy the issue or to confirm that this is a “bug” and not just a fluke resulting from something they did.
We’ve had this error reporting in place for awhile now and I’m happy to report that other than a small number of tickets being sent in, we’ve been able to resolve all the issues which have reared their ugly head and have thereby kept our clients’ sites running and chugging along smoothly.
This feature of i3SiteTools and the support from Digital Positions is just one of the many things we do for our clients behind the scenes, making us more proactive and less reactive.
